Sutton Smith is an explosive athlete for the 8th grade McEachern Indians. He’s a playmaker at 5’9 on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver/ running back and defensive back in the class of 2022. “I’ll play wherever coach puts me”, Smith said. The 8th grade McEachern Indians went 11-0 winning the GMSAA Championship in dominant fashion. Sutton as a defensive back was part of an elite Indian defense with 8 shutouts on the season.
“My biggest skillset is my speed and my footwork. I’m explosive with quickness”, Smith explained. One of Sutton’s biggest games of the year came against Harrison. Sutton caught a screen pass, made a few guys miss, and cut across the field for a 65 yard touchdown reception. A few series later Sutton took a handoff 55 yards to the outside for another touchdown run. The versatility is on display every time the ball is in his hands. “In a game against Pebblebrook I knew I was about to score, it was my favorite play this year. I made a move, made a guy miss, and took it 80 yards”, Sutton recalls. McEachern went on to defeat Pebblebrook 30-0 behind a big day from Smith.
Sutton Smith will be a McEachern Indian next year at the high school level with plans of making an immediate impact. “My goal is to play varsity next year, JV for sure. I met Coach Hockman, Coach Moss and Coach Foster already. I’ve been working every day since the last game played”. The explosive ability and eagerness to improve is there with No. 5. “I want to improve my cuts and get better with my stamina, too”.
Sutton was a member of last year’s Born to Compete All American Game and the Georgia – Florida Future Stars Game. “I plan to play in those again this year. I want to go to more camps and 7 on 7’s. I play baseball also and want to start track this year, too”. Sutton is an athletic star with a bright future ahead transitioning into high school.
