Future Stars Team Georgia Tryouts – Columbus Recap

Future Stars Game continues to crisscross Georgia looking for the best middle school athletes the state has to offer. With our stop in Columbus, there was plenty of talent on hand.

We begin with the 6^th grade MVP, Jamail Johnson. At 5’9, Johnson is not only a dominant receiver with speed, he stepped up with a big showing during one-on-one drills and sealed the 6^th MVP honors by separating himself from the competition.

Other Top 6^th Grade Performers:

• Antonio Watts may have been the best all-around athlete among the 6^th graders. He’s young, but already proving to be a potential threat on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and at corner.
• Radonda Beauchamp Jr. and Jonquis Hardaway also had great performances for the 6^th graders. Beauchamp, is an excellent press corner and the best defensive back at camp. Hardway’s small frame can be deceiving because of his explosiveness.

There was a buzz in the air before our 7^th grade camp even started, and much of the talk was all about our 7^th grade MVP Joseph McKay. At 6 feet; 205 lbs., he seemed out of place because he’s bigger, faster and stronger than everyone else on the field. McKay’s 4.81-40 gives him the 4^th best performance among all of the 7^th graders we’ve seen in camps so far this year. Team Florida’s coaches will have to figure out how to stop this kid, he can dominate the game at running back or defensive end.

Other top 7^th grade performances:

• Austin Toelle is a gritty, hard-nosed linebacker who can also be an excellent possession receiver.
• Marcus Marshall is a solid defensive back with good speed
• Grant Briscoe is a 5’11, hard-working tight end or defensive end.
• Tony Atkins rounds out the list having the best day of all the 7^th grade wide receivers.

Our look at the top performers in the 8^th grade begins with a young man who proves how important it is for players to go the extra mile, work hard on every play and every drill from start to finish. 8^th grade MVP Rodriquez Williams is a 5’8; 155 lbs. double threat with good speed, nice frame, great attitude and work ethic, very coachable and can play many positions but looks especially nice at running back or linebacker.

Other top 8^th grade performers:

• Brandon Vaughn is an early version of the ideal lunch pail type lineman. He’s an athlete that goes out and works hard every play and that type of hard work usually translates into big plays on the field on game day.
• Terrell Gordon stands at 5’11 but he’s a player with a very high ceiling when it comes to his athletic skills. He’s definitely a player to watch in the future.
• Eddie Williams’ sure hands and smooth ball catching abilities locked him in as the best receiver in the 8^th grade camp.
• Jon Stephens is a super quick athlete who would be an asset to any team.
• Jabari Smith is a big linebacker that moves extremely well and should be a run stopping force.

So three players from the Columbus area secured their spots on the Team Georgia. Overall, the camp had a lot of talent, especially in a 6^th Grade group that may be the best group we have seen to date.

Rosters for Team Georgia will be announced Wednesday, March 30^th and of course, they will face off with Team Florida Saturday June 18^th at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
